Medical City Healthcare Hosts 19 Blood Drives to Offset Summer Shortages

DALLAS — Medical City Healthcare is hosting 19 blood drives, in partnership with the American Red Cross North Texas Region and Carter BloodCare. The efforts aim to offset seasonal blood shortages.

Summer months often result in blood shortages nationwide due to decreased donations and increased demand. Vacations and summer activities result in fewer donors just as trauma cases rise around summer holidays. Additionally, school closures during the summer mean fewer blood drives.

“Just as our hospitals never close, the need for lifesaving blood is constant,” says Allen Harrison, president of Medical City Healthcare. “As part of Medical City Healthcare’s mission to care for and improve human life, we encourage our communities to join us, the Red Cross and Carter BloodCare to help meet our region’s blood demands and help save lives.”

According to the Red Cross, type O blood and platelet donors are essential right now to meet the needs of hospitals. Volunteer blood donors can improve a patient’s recovery or save their life, especially accident victims who may require many blood units through transfusions.

Healthy donors over the age of 16 can sign up for blood drives at the locations and times below.

The American Red Cross North Texas Region recently honored Medical City Healthcare with its Diamond Award for the second time for collecting 953 units of life-saving blood in 2024. The award is the highest honor given to organizations that collect more than 500 units annually.

“We are grateful to Medical City Healthcare for its ongoing efforts to collect lifesaving blood to improve health outcomes for patients in need,” says Linda Braddy, CEO of the American Red Cross North Texas Region. “We’re especially appreciative during the summer when the blood supply is low but the need is high.”
